In a thrilling display of skill and determination, Shane van Gisbergen made quite an impression during the wet conditions of the Cook Out Clash at Bowman Gray. Initially, he found himself struggling in the latter part of the field, but that quickly changed as the race unfolded. Early on, van Gisbergen had his share of confrontations, particularly with Austin Cindric and his former Trackhouse teammate, Daniel Suarez.
At one point, van Gisbergen expressed his frustration over the radio after spinning Cindric, stating, "People just kept running into me and I got sick of it." He also commented on his repeated run-ins with Suarez, saying, "It’s the third time the #7's got me... Guess he's excited he's not my teammate, he can hit me now."
As tensions rose among the drivers on the tight quarter-mile track, a significant development occurred during the halfway break when rain and sleet began to fall, forcing NASCAR to mandate a switch to wet-weather tires due to the chilly temperatures staying just above freezing.
When the race resumed, van Gisbergen was in 15th place but soon showcased his talent by navigating through the tricky conditions and climbing swiftly up the ranks. He eventually took the lead, commanding the race for a total of 15 laps while engaging in a fierce battle with Ryan Preece, who ultimately clinched victory.
Despite his strong performance, van Gisbergen’s lead diminished as the track began to dry out. With fewer than 40 laps remaining, disaster struck when Chase Briscoe collided with him, causing a spin that contributed to one of the 17 caution flags waved throughout this chaotic event. Regrettably, van Gisbergen could not recover from this setback and ultimately crossed the finish line in 20th place, a disappointing result given his earlier success.
After the race, he reflected on his experience, sharing, “It was a good bit of fun. There were moments of brilliance and moments that weren’t. It was cool to get to the front. We were just trying to search for the grip. The wet weather conditions were very different than what I’ve raced in Supercars, just with the way the corners are and the way the rubber lays down. But then it started to come back up again and dry up. It was pretty wild.
"But all in all, I’m happy with our run, and it’s a good way to start the season for this No. 97 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet team.”
Looking ahead, the official championship gets underway next week with the highly anticipated 68th running of the Daytona 500, marking the beginning of van Gisbergen's second full-time season in the Cup Series.
