Severe Storm Alert: Brisbane and Surrounds in the Firing Line
January 17, 2026, is shaping up to be a day of weather extremes for southeast Queensland. Senior meteorologist Felim Hanniffy from the Bureau of Meteorology has issued a warning for severe storms with large hail and damaging winds, which could impact areas across the region tonight and into tomorrow.
But here's where it gets controversial: while the worst-hit areas are predicted to be inland, just west of Brisbane, and between the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast hinterlands, some suburbs of Brisbane itself could also be drenched.
"If these storms develop as expected, we're looking at the potential for large hailstones, strong winds, and heavy rainfall," Hanniffy explained. "The risk is primarily focused on inland areas, but these storms could certainly make their way towards the coast as well."
And this is the part most people miss: the humidity levels in Brisbane are currently more akin to Far North Queensland. With temperatures predicted to remain high, at a maximum of 30 degrees or more every day next week, this extra humidity creates an unstable atmosphere, increasing the risk of severe storms.
Hanniffy added that rainfall of up to 50 millimeters is possible in some areas, with a maximum of 20 millimeters likely in the most affected parts of Brisbane. However, certain suburbs may receive significantly less rainfall.
So, what does this mean for Brisbane and its residents? Well, it's a reminder of the power and unpredictability of nature. While we can't control the weather, we can prepare for it. Keep an eye on the latest weather updates, have an emergency kit ready, and stay informed.
Remember, knowledge is power, and being prepared can make all the difference.
