According to a report from The Athletic, Boston was involved in “serious discussions” for a complex three-team trade. This hypothetical deal would have seen Isaac Paredes land with the Red Sox. In exchange, the Houston Astros would have received Brendan Donovan from the St. Louis Cardinals. However, as often happens in the intricate world of baseball trades, the pieces shifted. Brendan Donovan ultimately found his way to the Seattle Mariners in a separate three-team maneuver involving the Tampa Bay Rays.
But here's where it gets interesting: the Red Sox's pursuit of Paredes wasn't a solitary effort. The same report indicates that Boston was one of at least five teams that had been in discussions with the Astros regarding Isaac Paredes. This highlights the considerable interest in the infielder across the league.
The Red Sox did make an infield move by signing Isiah Kiner-Falefa. However, this signing doesn't fully resolve their infield puzzle, particularly at the third base position, which remains somewhat unsettled. While promising prospect Marcelo Mayer could potentially fill that role, doing so would create a vacancy at second base. Kiner-Falefa offers versatility, capable of playing both second and third base, but he's not known for the kind of offensive firepower that Boston seems to be seeking.
And this is the part most people miss: Isaac Paredes, while not exclusively a pure power hitter, possesses the valuable ability to hit for 20 home runs in a season. Furthermore, he's a versatile defender, capable of playing three different infield positions. This kind of flexibility and offensive potential is exactly what many teams, including the Red Sox, covet.
