Astronomers have discovered a mysterious object hidden within a giant gas cloud, a rare and captivating phenomenon. The story begins with a star, J0705+0612, located 3,000 light-years away, which suddenly dimmed by 40 times its usual brightness in September 2024. This event, lasting until May 2025, piqued the interest of Professor Nadia Zakamska from Johns Hopkins University. The star's unusual behavior suggested a rare occurrence, prompting further investigation.
Using powerful telescopes like the Gemini South, Apache Point Observatory's 3.5-meter telescope, and the 6.5-meter Magellan Telescopes, researchers observed a vast, slow-moving cloud of gas and dust passing in front of the star. This cloud, estimated to be 1.2 billion miles from its host star and 120 million miles in diameter, is gravitationally bound to a secondary object orbiting the star in the outer reaches of its planetary system. The nature of this object remains a mystery, but it must be massive enough to hold the cloud together.
The team's observations were enhanced by the use of the Gemini High-resolution Optical SpecTrograph (GHOST), which revealed multiple metals within the cloud and allowed for the direct measurement of the gas's three-dimensional motion. This marked the first time astronomers could study the internal gas motions of a disk orbiting a secondary object. The findings showed a dynamic environment with winds of gaseous metals, including iron and calcium.
The cloud's composition and the star's behavior led to intriguing theories about its formation. Professor Zakamska proposed that the object and cloud likely formed from the collision of two planets in the outer reaches of the star's planetary system, ejecting dust, rocks, and debris.
