Is Jai Opetaia's Unification Dream Facing a Major Roadblock? The boxing world is buzzing with the news that cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia has inked a deal with Zuffa Boxing, but whispers of potential unification bouts are already met with a healthy dose of skepticism. While Opetaia's team insists Zuffa will pave the way for him to unify the division's titles, the landscape is far from clear.
Opetaia's manager, Mick Francis, has been vocal about the champion's desire to hold all the belts. He revealed that a key concern for them was Zuffa Boxing's initial stance on sanctioning bodies. However, Francis explained that to secure Opetaia's signature, Zuffa, led by Dana White, has seemingly agreed to allow him to pursue unification fights. "Probably to sweeten the deal and get Jai across the line is that they will let Jai fight for the titles and unify the division, which is exactly what he wants to do," Francis shared.
Francis also highlighted that Opetaia wasn't fielding other promotional offers and that his signing is a significant move for the new Zuffa Boxing venture. "His personal brand will blow up and go through the roof and that’s something we’ve always wanted to do and he’ll get the opportunity to unify," Francis added, emphasizing Opetaia's core ambition. "Jai wants to unify the titles. He wants someone to believe in him and to support him and someone behind him."
Reflecting on past experiences, Francis mentioned the impact of "Riyadh Season" on global boxing, noting its benefits for fighters and promoters. However, he also observed a potential slowdown in Riyadh's activity and pointed out the financial and logistical challenges of staging major title fights in Australia due to its population size. Opetaia's last appearance on a Riyadh Season card was in late 2024 against Jack Massey. Francis has two fights lined up for Opetaia this year, with a big bout planned later in the year against a light heavyweight eager to challenge the best and capture belts.
But here's where it gets controversial... The entry of Zuffa Boxing has drawn sharp criticism from some established figures in the sport. Mauricio Sulaiman, the president of the WBC, expressed his disappointment with Zuffa's aggressive approach. "It’s very unfortunate that Dana White and all his team have taken this route, to try to come in and try to bully and be so aggressive," Sulaiman stated. He believes such an attitude is detrimental to the overall health of boxing, suggesting that Zuffa's presentation is "completely against the benefit of the boxer."
Sulaiman used the example of boxer Callum Walsh, who has proudly displayed his WBC Continental Americas title. He noted that Walsh's dream, like that of many others, is to become a WBC world champion. Sulaiman contrasted Zuffa's approach with the rich history and tradition of established bodies like the WBC, WBO, IBF, and WBA. He likened Zuffa and TKO to minor leagues, similar to past failed attempts like the XFL, and expressed hope that they would provide opportunities for boxers, but reiterated his concern about their confrontational method.

While Zuffa Boxing aims to shake up the sport, the established organizations like the WBC have a deeply ingrained history and a clear pathway for fighters aspiring to world championships.
