Hansi Flick: Barcelona's Focus on Real Madrid Ahead of Supercopa Final (2026)

The Spanish Supercopa final is upon us, and the focus is intense! With Barcelona and Real Madrid set to clash, the spotlight is firmly on the rivalry. But what about the potential wildcard, Kylian Mbappé? Here's what's happening.

Barcelona's coach, Hansi Flick, is keeping his team's eyes on the prize: Real Madrid. The upcoming final in Saudi Arabia has everyone buzzing, especially with the possible return of Mbappé, who has been nursing a knee injury.

Mbappé, a player who has already scored 29 goals this season, adds another layer of intrigue. He has also scored six times in five Clásicos. However, Flick emphasizes that those games have generally favored Barcelona.

"How many Clásicos have we played in the last one-and-a-half years?" Flick questioned, addressing concerns about Mbappé potentially testing their high defensive line. "[We have played] five. We lost one, OK? So it's about that. I know he's a fantastic player and with space he's really great, but also for us to compete against one of the best teams in the world."

Flick's strategy is clear: focus on their own game. "We will adapt like we always do, but it's not about Mbappé, it's about Madrid and how we want to play. We are focused on our philosophy, our idea how we want to play."

When asked about Mbappé's form, Flick didn't hold back, calling him the best striker in the world right now. "At the moment, Mbappé is the best striker, it's like that," the German coach added. "He has scored many, many goals and is a world class player."

But here's where it gets controversial... Mbappé was on target when Madrid beat Barça 2-1 in LaLiga earlier this season, ending Barcelona's four-game winning streak in Clásicos under Flick. That result put Madrid five points ahead of Barça. However, there has been a dramatic shift since then, with Barcelona now leading LaLiga by four points and on a nine-game winning streak.

"It was only one game," Flick said, reflecting on the Clásico defeat in October. "[Since then], we came back. We have focused on what is necessary and we play much better and also more successful. This is the thing."

Flick is confident in his team's current form. "The team is very focused. I am happy about this situation at the moment. We want to play on our best level. I have a good feeling about my team. Tomorrow we have to show how good we are."

And this is the part most people miss... This Supercopa final is the fourth consecutive meeting between Barcelona and Real Madrid at this stage. The recent history of the Supercopa suggests it's a predictor of success in the second half of the season. The last four winners – Madrid (2022 and 2024) and Barcelona (2023 and 2025) – have gone on to win LaLiga.

Barcelona won last year's final 5-2. They're entering this year's match on a nine-game winning streak, having not conceded a goal in their last five games, and with a nearly fully fit squad. The only confirmed absences are Gavi and Andreas Christensen, while Lamine Yamal is ready to start after being fit enough to make the bench for the 5-0 semifinal win over Athletic Club.

What do you think? Will Mbappé's potential return swing the game? Or will Barcelona's focus on their own style lead them to victory? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
